Denomination: Church of England
Type: Church, Holy Well
Period: Medieval

Features: Floors, Stone carvings

Location: 8 miles NNW of Banbury off the B4100.

This is an early medieval church now in a remote, largely farming, community, but it is an area that was once a centre for the Templars. The various floor levels, revealed by late 19th-century restoration, give a sense of a varied past, as do the carvings on the arcade capitals, and the nearby medieval holy well which is set in the hillside next to the church, and was a focus for pre-Reformation pilgrims who sought healing. The Victorian structures do not obliterate the ability of both the well and the church to point back to a former time of simple trust in such sanctified centres of worship and blessing.
